Compressor Replacement: A Full System Overhaul

Some repairs go far beyond a quick fix — they require draining a system down, swapping out major components, and carefully bringing everything back to spec. In this job, our team carried out a full compressor replacement on a rooftop condensing unit, one of the more involved repairs in HVAC servicing.

The process started with isolating and removing the faulty compressors. Using a torch, our technician carefully brazed the copper piping joints, heating the connections evenly to ensure a strong, leak-free seal once the new compressor was fitted in place. Precision here is critical — an uneven braze can create a weak point that leads to refrigerant leaks down the line.

With the new compressors connected, the team moved to leak testing, pressurizing the system with nitrogen (rated to 200 bars) and using a mirror to visually inspect fittings and joints for any sign of escaping gas or oil residue — a simple but effective way to catch leaks that instruments alone might miss.

Once the system passed pressure testing, technicians proceeded to vacuum the lines and recharge the system with refrigerant, carefully monitoring gauge readings and weighing the refrigerant cylinder to ensure the exact charge amount specified for the unit. Every reading was cross-checked against manifold gauge pressures to confirm the system was operating within the correct range before being signed off.

The old compressors, removed and set aside, are a reminder of just how much wear these components endure over years of continuous operation — and why timely replacement keeps a cooling system running efficiently rather than pushing it toward complete failure.
