Keeping Things Turning: Belt and Pulley Maintenance
Keeping Things Turning: Belt and Pulley Maintenance
Not every part of an HVAC system involves refrigerant or wiring — some of the most essential mechanical components are the simplest ones. In this job, our technician inspected the belt and pulley drive system on a cooling tower fan assembly, a part often overlooked until it starts to slip, squeal, or fail outright.
The multi-groove pulley sits at the heart of the drive mechanism, transferring rotational power from the motor to the fan blades that pull air through the tower. Over time, exposure to moisture, heat, and constant operation causes belts to wear, stretch, or crack — reducing their grip and, eventually, the system's cooling performance.
Working carefully around the tower's tight mechanical housing, our technician checked the belt tension and alignment, making sure the drive was seated correctly on the pulley grooves. Proper tension is critical here — too loose, and the belt slips under load; too tight, and it places excess strain on the motor bearings.
It's unglamorous work, done in cramped, grimy spaces most people never see — but a well-maintained belt drive keeps a cooling tower running quietly and efficiently, preventing the kind of sudden failure that can take an entire system offline.
